Birsa Dasgupta’s upcoming film Crisscross epitomizes the hardships of five women from
different strata’s of the society. Ira, Suzy, Ms. Sen, Meher and Rupa epitomize the turmoil’s and crisis of women in our society; no matter how educated and financially secured they are. Mimi, Priyanka Sarkar, Jaya Ahsan, Nusrat Jahan and Sohini Sarkar respectively paint the dilemma’s, hazards, desires and perils of a woman which is vividly replicated in the first song Duniya as released by the makers.
Penned by Smaranjit Chakraborty the song was released two days back on the 8th of July. Actress Chitrangada Chakraborty performs on the song along the alleys of the ‘City of Joy’ which also introduces the principal characters, alongside. The movie is based on acclaimed writer Smaranjit Chakraborty’s novel of the same name which also focuses on the dark side of Kolkata.
The city alienates and adores its people- nurtures and at times also turn complete stranger towards its dwellers. However, the song urges the characters to come to terms with the adversities of life and instead see the sunny side of it. Beautifully sung by Nikita Gandhi -the energy, vivacity and the freshness of the number adds a new edge to the film which depicts our city in not so bad light.
Mimi here essays the role of a photo journalist who is also obsessed with her work at the same time. She is ripped between her professional and love life and is in a quest to find answers. Priyanka is a single mother and a painter by profession.
Nusrat is a budding actress who is struggling to find her foothold in the industry whereas Jaya is an arrogant, independent and financially sound woman who lives all by herself. Sohini on the other hand is a very simple, house wife who is a victim of domestic violence and secretly desires to lead an independent life on her own terms. Each has their frustrations and crisis and how their paths finally crosses and turns their life ‘topsy-turvy’ forms the climax of the story. Produced by SVF, ‘Crisscross’ which is eyeing an August 10th release has music by Jam 8.
