Pupa is a social drama woven with the perfect dose of emotions and sentiment which an individual can undergo during times of personal crisis. The movie shows the mental and emotional turbulences of a son who is struck between his lucrative job in the U.S and his father- who suddenly suffers a brain stroke post his mother’s demise and slips into coma.
The film is a one of its kind as it’s the first Bengali drama which has ‘euthanasia’ or a ‘right to die’ as its theme. The story progresses towards how the emotionally disoriented son fights an everyday battle of staying back in India to be by the side of his dying father or returns to the states where a rewarding project awaits him which will further boost his already flourishing career. Despite assurances and advices by his elder sister and their favorite Rajat uncle to not let go off such a promising career, his conscience continues to haunt him and his inner crusade continues.
The characters of the agonized son, sister and uncle have been deftly essayed by Rahul Banerjee, Sudipta Chakraborty and Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, respectively. Sudipta’s screen character too suffers an emotional setback and receives disapproval for getting too much embroiled into her ailing father’s life. Pradip Mukherjee will also be seen playing a pivotal role in the movie which has Joy Sarkar as the music director.
The movie which has such a sensitive and unique subject has already toured quite a few festivals and has earned rave reviews everywhere. Directed by Indrasis Acharya the film has been produced by Rajiv Mehra and will hit the screens on July, 20.
