In a generation of Snapchat and Instagram stories, there is something nostalgically sweet about watching veteran stars on screen. Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor display an amusing chemistry as the geriatric father-son duo in Umesh Shukla directorial 102 Not Out. The film’s trailer perfectly captures the blend of comedy and emotional drama that drives this whimsical story. The trailer begins with the sight of a 102-year-old Amitabh Bachchan declaring that he wants to break the record of the oldest man alive. “Only 16 years to go!” he declares. But his son (Rishi Kapoor), does not share the enthusiasm. Grumpy, alone, and old, he wishes to live a quiet old age. So, the peppy dad decides to send his son off to the old-age home.

This forms the crux of Shukla‘s film, and the trailer indeed. Adapted from Saumya Joshi‘s play of the same name, the film’s trailer is amusing. Bachchan and Kapoor seem to be in good form, with the former showing some impeccable comic timing. Kapoor looks at home playing a grumpy, shy old man, a personality contrasting the actor’s real nature. The only hitch in the trailer seems to be the sudden shift in emotion. The question about why these two old men are living alone in the city is answered when Bachchan‘s character asks his son to write a ‘love letter’ to his wife. Perhaps Kapoor plays a man estranged from his family. Bachchan‘s character also utters the dialogue of ‘forgetting your children when they turn unfaithful’. This seems to point a theme of old men alienated by their children.
It seems that the two are not really father-son, but have bonded together so. While stereotyping the ‘Gujrati’ way of life, the trailer does have enough jokes, moments of comedy and two actors in good form to generate curiosity for the film. Shukla, whose last film OMG: Oh My God! (2012) earned him critical acclaim, also has captured the snappy writing of the play lending the trailer credibility. 102 Not Out is produced by Sony Pictures in association with Treetop Entertainment and Benchmark Pictures. The film is scheduled to be released on 4 May 2018.
